Reconciling the internal abstract qualities of an image with the need to reflect on the physical world beyond the studio is probably the central challenge of each painting. As ever, most work begins in a loose, speculative way, allowing the accidental and the unforeseen to trigger thoughts and memories of places and events. These, along with the painting’s internal dynamics, will inform the direction each painting will take and determine the degree of balance between figuration and abstraction. Recently there has been a shift towards looser, less stratified structures. Transient phenomena such as light, weather, sound and mood continue to play an important role in decisions of colour and mark.
