Selected Work 2019/20
Like earlier work, these paintings continue the concern with making connections between the internal abstract language of a painting and prior memories and observations. To prompt the accidental and unforeseen, each piece is loosely planned but, as work progresses, thoughts about specific places and events inevitably seep into the decision-making and inform the direction the painting will take. In some ways, these paintings can be thought of as landscapes though they refer more to the physical and transient structures of geology, archaeology, weather and sound rather than to topographical appearance. The most recent work has a more minimal structure where juxtaposition of colour and surface play an indirect role in alluding to a sense of a place.
